Detailed Process OverviewYour Mapper takes municipal, state, federal, public or private information and turns it into interactive online maps. We can map any data that is a pin-point on a map, like an address, intersection, or latitude and longitude coordinate.
Detailed ProcessThe Your Mapper platform makes the task of creating complicated online maps from your data simple.
Click the diagram for a detailed view.
Your DatabaseWe can take exported data from your own databases and load them into our platform, creating interactive maps and services. We can handle any database format, Excel spreadsheet, CSV file, or XOMGL formatted XML. After the initial data load, we keep the data updated on a regular basis with incremental updates.
OMG Standard Format
Click for Details The Open Municipal Geodata Format specifies a way to format data that is easy to load into a spreadsheets, mapping applications, databases, and analysis tools. There are both XML based (XoMgL) and CSV based versions of the OMG Format. This format requires the inclusion of Latitude and Longitude coordinates for each point to be mapped. If the source data does not have Latitude or Longitude, or cannot be formatted into the OMG Standard fields, then we consider it to be a generic data format.
Click for Details Data that can't be delivered in the OMG Format is considered a generic format in the Your Mapper platform. We will process the data from its source format (database files, spreadsheet, XML, etc) and convert it into the OMG Format for loading into our database. Along the way, the data also gets 'Geocoded,' which means that each text address, city, and state combination gets assigned a Latitude and Longitude coordinate.
Click for Details If the source data does not have Latitude and Longitude coordinates, we run the data through our custom geocoding servers. These servers use a unique system that tries to match an address, city, state, and zip code combination to a specific point on the planet. We check the location against our internal rooftop-accurate geocodes, previous successful matches, and a variety of 3rd party geocoders. Most datasets are 99-100% geocoded. The non-matched addresses are matched by hand using our internal tools, or removed from the map if no match is possible.
Your Mapper DatabaseOur database can handle millions of locations per dataset or map, and serve up user requests for data in microseconds. In fact, our platform works better with lots of data. Updates to the data are handled using a unique ID as part of the OMG Standard format, allowing previous locations to be updated, new locations to be added, and reducing the file sizes of regular updates.
Interactive Web Maps
Click for Details Once the data is loaded into the Your Mapper Platform staging area, it is ready to be published to a live map, whether for the first time or as an update. When published, the map appears on the YourMapper.com website for users to browse, search, comment on, rate, share, and bookmark. Users can then choose to limit their map searches to certain categories, date ranges, or keyword searches, and focus the results around a particular address.
Data FeedsEvery search done on a map can be automatically grabbed and used outside of the site through our datafeeds. RSS feeds are used on home pages to show users when new data appears in their search. KML feeds can be overlayed into any external mapping application, on or offline. CSV files can be placed into a spreadsheet for sorting, analysis, and reporting. Other data feeds are available too, like JSON, GeoRss, and basic HTML.
Ratings, Comments, FavsEach map can be rated by site users on the Map Detail page. Comments can be written, and conversations about a map started. And users can bookmark and name favorite searches to their account for later.
Mobile DevicesAll data that is available on the site's maps are also available on our mobile application. The loading times and features have been streamlined for on-the-go browsing and slower data speeds. This gives you access to the entire Your Mapper site wherever you are. Searches made on the mobile site can be shared with others by email, and specific locations can be shared and mapped in the device's specific mobile applications.
Click for Details Every map on the site can be embedded interactively into another website or blog. You simply choose the map you want using the online interactive map creation tool, and get a bit of HTML code to cut and paste. See our client list for some examples.
ReportingEmbedded maps can be viewed and modified in your account, and you can generate daily, monthly, and annual usage reports. These reports show you map usage in the form of raw data and graphs. You can export this data to your own external spreadsheet applications.
Developer APIIf you are a web developer, you can access all the data on our site through the Developer API. This lets web designers create their own on-demand web applications using our map data. You can query what maps are available in an area, get map metadata, get locations based on your own filters, and get details of every single location on every map. With over 7 data formats from KML to JSON, you can get the data in the format you prefer. The API is so powerful, this entire site runs off of it!
Location Detail PagesEvery location on a map gets its own page of details. This includes the information you see in the map popups, but also shows additional details, neighborhood street views, driving directions link, comments and ratings, and some sharing options. If the location gets updated in the future, this page will show that new data automatically.
